Frequently Asked Questions
Active overnight support involves a support worker who is awake and actively supporting the participant throughout the night, providing regular monitoring, personal care, repositioning, medication management, seizure response, or other continuous support as required. It is appropriate for participants with high or complex overnight care needs. A sleepover arrangement involves a support worker who sleeps at the participant’s home but is available to respond if the participant needs assistance during the night. It is appropriate for participants who need professional presence and availability but do not require continuous active support. Grace Care assesses each participant’s specific overnight needs to determine which arrangement is appropriate and discusses this clearly with participants and families during the intake process.
Overnight care is funded through the NDIS Core Supports budget under Assistance with Daily Life. Active overnight support is typically funded at a higher rate than sleepover support because it involves a continuously working support worker throughout the night. The specific funding rates follow the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. The number of overnight shifts funded in a participant’s plan depends on their individual assessment and the overnight support needs identified during the NDIS planning process. Grace Care can review your NDIS plan to confirm overnight care funding and advise on how to access or request additional overnight support funding at your next plan review.
Yes. Grace Care can arrange overnight support across any number of nights per week depending on the participant’s needs and NDIS funding. Some participants require overnight support every night while others need it on specific nights to provide carer relief or to cover periods when family carers cannot be present. We design overnight support rosters entirely around the participant’s requirements and available funding.
Overnight safety is managed through multiple layers including thorough assessment of overnight risk factors, development of clear written emergency response protocols specific to each participant’s health and disability profile, selection and training of overnight workers specifically suited to the participant’s overnight care requirements, consistent worker allocation so the overnight worker is familiar with the participant and their care plan, and clear morning handover procedures that communicate any overnight events to the day support team or family. For participants with specific medical conditions such as epilepsy or respiratory needs, overnight workers receive specialist training and operate under protocols developed in consultation with the participant’s medical team.
Grace Care prioritises consistency in overnight care arrangements because trust and familiarity are especially important when someone is in your home through the night. We assign a primary overnight worker to each participant’s roster and work to maintain that consistency across scheduled shifts wherever possible. Where additional overnight workers are required for roster coverage, they are introduced to the participant in advance and fully briefed on the overnight care plan before their first shift.
