Frequently Asked Questions
Short Term Accommodation and respite are effectively the same NDIS support referred to by different names. STA is the formal NDIS term for funded short-term stays in an alternative accommodation setting, which provides the participant with full daily support while giving family carers a break from their caring responsibilities. The NDIS funds STA under the Core Supports budget and it can be used for planned regular breaks, emergency carer relief, or to give participants positive independent experiences away from their usual home environment.
The NDIS typically funds up to 28 days of STA per plan year, though this can vary depending on individual plan assessments and the participant’s specific support needs. The 28 days can be taken in blocks of up to 14 consecutive days at a time. Grace Care can review your NDIS plan to confirm how many STA days are available and help you plan how to use them most effectively throughout the year.
Yes. STA funding can be used for both planned, scheduled respite breaks and for emergency situations where the primary carer is unexpectedly unavailable due to illness, hospitalisation, or other urgent circumstances. Grace Care maintains a rapid-response capability for emergency STA placements and will always do their best to accommodate urgent requests when families find themselves in a crisis situation.
Grace Care provides complete daily living support throughout an STA stay, including personal care, hygiene assistance, meal preparation, medication management, mobility support, and any other support included in the participant’s care plan. In addition, we provide structured activities, social programs, and community access outings to ensure the stay is engaging and enjoyable rather than simply a supported waiting period.
Can participants with complex support needs or challenging behaviours access STA through Grace Care?
Yes. Grace Care has experience supporting participants with complex needs, high support requirements, and behaviour support plans in STA settings. Our thorough pre-stay intake process ensures the support team is fully briefed and prepared before the participant arrives, and we implement existing behaviour support plans consistently throughout the stay. We discuss complex support requirements in detail during the booking process to ensure we can provide appropriate and safe care.
We recommend booking as early as possible, particularly for planned respite stays at popular times such as school holidays and festive periods. However, Grace Care accommodates bookings with reasonable notice in most circumstances and maintains emergency capacity for urgent respite needs. Contact us on 1300 069 338 as soon as you know your dates and we will confirm availability promptly.
